I just found a great source of trail info. Its a software collection of US Geological Survey Maps packaged together with nice GUI that does distance, elevation, and exact longitute and latitude in case you have a GPS.
The software is "TOPO!" (www.topo.com) and can be bought for $49 per map set at Eastern Mountian Sports in the Boston area, check there site for other distributors.
Right now they have most of New England on disk and there doing other states soon.
I just picked up the Connecticut, Berkshires (MA) and S. Green Mountains (VT) disk tonight. In a few hours I found about 100 miles of jeep trails, most marked on the map as either 'Jeep Trail' or '4WD', plus contour maps of all the powerlines in the region.
You can put markers on the map and save there positions for later use, plot elevation and distance over a route, and print or save as .JPGs any section of any map.
This program is sweet, and well worth the $49 for the amount of raw data alone!

I wonder if 4 wheeling would be the same if I brought a laptop and a GPS with me?
