Hi Hoosier,
I was thinking along the lines of a bad sending unit till you mentioned that it starts ticking when the pressure gets lower.
I'm assuming that you've checked the oil level, and you may want to get an oil change if you haven't done so in the last 5000 miles (total viscosity breakdown?)
From what I hear on other boards, the presure droping after the engine heats up is normal, my guage just sticks at 40 so I don't know how low of a drop is normal.
I'm considering getting a set of aftermarket guages for the YJ, seeing how the fuel and oil guages are pretty flaky, but I think your issue could be engine related.
I'd take it to a mechanic that you can trust (oxymoron?) and see what they say.

: Hello All. I was wondering what could be causing my
: oil pressure gauge to fluctuate so much. It does fine
: at start up and for a few miles down the road, then
: it drops pretty low. When I get to an intersection, I
: can hear the engine ticking. Please provide any
: thoughts as to what is causing this. Thanx
